Abstract Expressionist from Sarawak, Borneo

David Chew is one of the rare Abstract Expressionism artists in Sarawak, Borneo.  He started his artistic journey since early childhood, trained by established artist in Impressionism painting.  In 2000, the desire to create art that he attained became an unyielding obligation to himself to explore the inner mechanism of his creative consciousness and transformed him into Abstract Expressionism artist.  His Action Painting uses drip-and-pour technique, and further improvised with other techniques and styles; developed into his own unique style which is rare in this region.  Besides water color and oil paints, he works majorly on acrylic paints with huge canvases.  His subjects of painting are concept, philosophy, emotions, feeling, recording of incidents and self-reflection.


His art vision is to “make the invisible visible”, allows his art creations to touch every soul and create awareness in every individual’s life journey.  He believes the purpose of his artwork is to bring positive energy, inspiring and awakening the viewers’ inner strength, helping viewer to connect with inner-self.


Since 2017, he is the President of the prestige art society — Sarawak Artists Society. He is also the member artist of the Malaysia National Visual Arts Gallery. He had his solo Art Show titled “Encounter” in 2014. He participated in various art projects and exhibitions domestically and internationally, such as invited to the International Art Camp in Poland (organized by Poland artists & authority), Art Camp in Kota Kinabalu (organized by the National Arts Gallery), International Art Camp in Alor Setar (2019), Exhibition in National Arts Gallery, PechaKucha 20x20 Talk, “Creative Lifestyle” talk in Clubhouse (2021), Sarawak State Library Art Show (online/offline) (2021), ABSTRACT 2022 Art Show, Mini Film x Art Festival 2022 by UNIMAS, and etc just to name a few. His artworks are collected locally and abroad (such as New York, Dublin, Beijing, Warsaw, Dubai, Taiwan, etc) by collectors ranging from corporate to individual. He was involved in the beautifying project for Pullman Hotel, Pacific Regency Hotel, Hilton Hotel, Alliance Bank, Lush Residences, etc.  With his certified trainer background, he also conduct workshops ranging from Abstract Art Appreciation, Self-Leadership via Art Jamming, Self-Actualisation via Art Jamming, Team-building with Art Creation, and etc. for personnel and corporates.  


He is consistently in the quest of new medium, technique, subjects and concept, to break-through the boundary of creativity.
